In Progress II

Finally started to put the figures into the painting. These will eventually be a rooster nesting a skull.

Studies: All Good Birds Leave For Winter (Teach Me To Fly)

I hardly ever work with blue, but I knew i would need to on this painting so i decided to make some side studies to help me out. Here is my initial concept for the painting, it was to have a horizontal color wash as the main background. Of course everything is always tentative and never set in stone. The final piece ended up having a mix of horizontal and vertical washes... just goes to show everything changes haha

Swatches in blue... and a random doodle.

Swatches in warmer hues... halfway through planning, I thought I'd like to add some warm tones to help signify the period in season that the painting alludes to, but finally found it unnecessary. The colors are off, but you get the idea :]

In Progress...

I'm not working on a new painting for my intermediate painting class. I had a difficult time getting started, for more reasons than one... here are the first set of photographs (taken on campus) based on its progress.

I started by working up the atmospheric backgrounds i usually do, this time in blue. In all honesty, I was very hesitant to use blue in such a massive way, but I was trying to see into the future of the painting and it eventually back-fired on me. For some reason, it did not register in my mind that I was painting "the sky." So, being that this was not my intention, I knew I had to make a change, fast.

I painted a coat of white over the whole painting in order to remove the traces of blue. You could still see the hue come through, but I knew once I set the next color down, the blue would be extremely difficult to see.

With the coat of white still wet, i began to add my new colors. These included viridian and a subtle use of naples yellow. I was told it still resembles "the sky." I believe it is drastically different, although I admit I don't have a decent picture to show the painting's current colors accurately.
